JANUARY 2010
  • Columbia fellow Alexandra Fenwick's story, "Charter Schools Rise in New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina," appears in the January U.S. News & World Report annual issue on high schools. It is then linked to by Educate Now! and Trouble the Water, a site about the resurgence of New Orleans that is tied to a documentary nominated for an Academy Award.
  • At the Pacific Northwest Journalism That Matters conference, News21 National Director Jody Brannon engages in a Q&A with another delegate to discuss the future of news.
  • The story "Mixed-Race in U.S. struggle to form political, personal identities," by Maryland News21 reporters Kimberly Davis and Christopher Mathews, appears on Behavioral Health Central, distributed by McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. It also appears on Cleveland.com and Daily Me.
  • Columbia fellow Sharon McClosky's story on grade school students learning the basics of money during the economic downturn is used by two Gannett newspapers in Wisconsin, the Stevens Point Journal and Marshfield News Herald, and by CBS MoneyWatch.

  • The ABC affiliate in Phoenix, ABC15, produced a segment on News21 that focused on ASU fellow Dave Kempa's story exploring the motivation behind people crossing the border and the plight of a southern Mexico farm town.
  • Gannett features a North Carolina package about the impact of global warming on an Alaska village on its Content One special reports on climate change. These topics pages appear on 32 sites. See the example on Delaware Online.
  • Arizona State fellow Evan Wyloge travels to Dubai to document the intersection of urban design and labor issues on behalf of ASU's Herberger Institute School of Design Innovation.
  • The Visual Student, the blog of the National Press Photographers Association, examines the work of North Carolina News21, winners of several NPPA awards.
  • A University of Iowa mass-media and gender class produces a series of Q&As with leading women in journalism, including News21 National Director Jody Brannon.
  • LinkTV uses a pair of North Carolina News21 presentations, one on an Alaskan village moving to higher ground and the other on the boom in Texas wind farms.
  • News21 National Director Jody Brannon delivers a keynote at the China Media Summit in Shanghai on Dec. 12, with coverage appearing on the Chinese portal Netease, in text with video plus Q&A.

  • Four News21 projects earn honors in the September National Press Photographers Assocation competition. UNC's Jose Corbella won in the individual video category, and the team video category was a UNC sweep: "Down the Line," "Moving to Higher Ground" and "Voices of Roscoe."

  • Northwestern News21 fellow Kate Shellnutt reviews her stories for the Windy Citizen.
